USS Dorchester is sunk in the Labrador Sea.

The troop transport ship en route to Greenland is struck by a German torpedo in the Labrador Sea. Some 675 of the 900 men on board lose their lives. Four chaplains are subsequently credited with helping scores of sailors survive, before giving up their life jackets and ultimately drowning themselves.
